Round 2 : Sam Bird (Virgin Racing), Lucas di Grassi (Audi Abt Sport), Sébastien Buemi (edams-Renault)

Race

Sam Bird wins the Putrajaya ePrix ahead of Lucas Di Grassi and Sébastien Buemi

ABOUT THE race

I'm very happy. Lucas did an amazing job coming through from the back, as did Seb. I knew they were pushing at the end, but we had it all under control.

Sam Bird (Virgin Racing)

ABOUT THE city

The Formula E Championship features some class drivers. I know quite a lot of them. The series is still in its early days but it's got a big future ahead of it...

backstage

It's very warm in the eVillage. Here, it's a very good location. You can see the chicane 1, just after the grid.

Two hours before the race, Stephane Sarrazin (Venturi) with rally legend, Jean Ragnotti.

ABOUT THE race

We designed Formula E particularly with young fans in mind.

Alexandro Agag (CEO, Formula E)

Race

Despite winning qualifying, Nicolas Prost will not start from pole position because of the 10-place grid penalty he was handed after his last-turn accident in Beijing. The Frenchman will consequently start from 11th on the grid. So, it's Oriol Servia who will start from pole

ABOUT THE race

After the abuse I took after Beijing, it's great to have won qualifying! I've got nothing else to say.

Nicolas Prost

our Expertise

The big unknown factor is the weather. The Michelin Pilot Sport EV was designed for 'normal' rain. Here, we will be able to fit the cars with specific 're-cut' 'Typhoon' tyres if the conditions are extreme. Even so, visibility could be a problem..

  • 22.11.14 - 15h38
Thanks for following another exciting FIA Formula E race in our company. Action will resume in Uruguay on December 13 (round three).
  • 22.11.14 - 15h10
Beijing winner Di Grassi continues to lead the title standings on 43 points, but Bird is now just three points behind in second place.
  • 22.11.14 - 15h06
Sam Bird: "I'm very happy. Lucas [Di Grassi] did an amazing job coming through from the back, as did Seb [Buemi]. I knew they were pushing at the end, but we had it all under control."
  • 22.11.14 - 15h02
Di Grassi and Buemi complete the podium - both incredibly having begun the race from the back of the grid - with Prost fourth, D’Ambrosio fifth, Chandhok sixth, pole-sitter Servia seventh, Antonio Felix da Costa eighth, Jaime Alguersuari ninth and Abt clinging grittily onto tenth.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h59
Second place for Di Grassi (Audi Sport Abt) keeps the Brazilian at the top of the championship order ahead of the upcoming races in Uruguay and Argentina.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h58
No such dramas for Bird, though, who wins the second Formula E race in fine style. He even had energy left over to spare once the chequered flag had fallen!
  • 22.11.14 - 14h56
Drama on the last lap as Senna hits the wall. The Brazilian had been pushing hard to try to wrest third place away from Buemi. It's a hefty impact, but he thankfully climbs out unscathed.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h54
Like history repeating itself as two iconic names from the sport - Senna and Prost - go wheel-to-wheel for fourth place along the start/finish straight, with the Brazilian using his FanBoost to gain the advantage
  • 22.11.14 - 14h52
As Bird sprints clear at the front once again, Abt has been caught by the second-placed pack and has no answer to their onslaught.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h51
The fastest race lap so far was produced by Jaime Alguersuari (1m24.429s)
  • 22.11.14 - 14h50
Leader Abt is rolling the dice as he desperately tries to eke out his battery life, but Bird has caught him and makes easy work of the German to reclaim the top spot with five laps remaining. Can the Audi Sport Abt man hold onto second as his pursuers home in?
  • 22.11.14 - 14h48
Trulli and Piquet under investigation for their coming together. Montagny gets a second drive-through penalty for pit lane speeding again
  • 22.11.14 - 14h47
Drama at Turn One! Trulli moves across on Piquet Jr under braking and elbows the Brazilian into the wall. Di Grassi takes advantage as Piquet Jr is out.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h45
Piquet Jr down the inside of Di Grassi into Turn One to snatch fourth place.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h44
Trulli has been given a drive-through penalty for energy infringement; Montagny is similarly in trouble for pit-lane speeding.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h42
Abt leads the race following his early car swap, but with less than 50% energy left, surely he will need to pit again. Behind second-placed Bird, Trulli, Di Grassi, Piquet, Buemi and Nicolas Prost continue to keep close company.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h42
    Top three after 23 laps: 1) Abt. 2) Bird +12.782s. 3) Trulli +22.716. Etc.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h39
It appears rain may be on the way - this could get even more interesting...
  • 22.11.14 - 14h36
The pit-lane is now getting very busy...
  • 22.11.14 - 14h35
Senna and Brabham have both spun - did they collide?
  • 22.11.14 - 14h35
Two retirements so far: Michela Cerruti (18) and Nick Heidfeld (23).
  • 22.11.14 - 14h34
Second-place squabblers Trulli, Chandhok, Servia and Piquet Jr come into the pits en masse. Bird and Senna stay out.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h31
Living up to his surname, Bird is fairly flying away at the front of the field as the battle rages on for second between Trulli, Chandhok, Servia, Piquet and Senna. Sam's lead is up to 7.4 seconds after 15 of 31 laps.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h30
The timing screen is currently showing that Montagny and Heidfeld are under investigation for their earlier incident as a number of drivers pit to perform their mid-race car swap
  • 22.11.14 - 14h29
More drama: Montagny has lost his front wing and Senna has swiped the wall - does the Mahindra driver have damaged steering?
  • 22.11.14 - 14h26
We're green again! Sam Bird absolutely nails the re-start, as Chandhok looks eager to find a way past Trulli for second.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h25
Abt the first driver to pit to change cars under the safety car.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h24
Safety car is out again, eroding Bird's 3.8-second lead.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h23
Heidfeld in the wall following contact with Franck Montagny; Senna takes advantage to nip past the Frenchman into sixth. Heidfeld is out.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h20
Chandhok relieves Servia of 3rd as the pole-sitter continues to fall down the order. He now has Piquet Jr, Heidfeld and Montagny all queuing up behind.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h18
Bird extends his advantage to 3.5 seconds as he sets fastest lap of the race.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h15
Trulli has now also demoted the pole-sitter, but is 2.5 seconds adrift of new leader Bird - can he reel him in?
  • 22.11.14 - 14h14
Superb wheel-to-wheel duel between Servia and Bird, and the Virgin driver pulls off a classic cutback move to snatch the lead!
  • 22.11.14 - 14h12
Safety car in this lap. We are racing again!
  • 22.11.14 - 14h11
Order under the safety car is Servia leading from Bird, Trulli, Karun Chandhok, Nelson Piquet Jr and Heidfeld.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h09
Safety car out following a couple of lap one incidents: Legge collided with Michela Cerruti after the Amlin Aguri driver lost the back end of her car (and subsequently her front wing), as Andretti newcomer Matthew Brabham sideswiped Heidfeld at the hairpin.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h06
Lights-out! Textbook getaway for pole-sitter Servia and Bird goes with him. Jarno Trulli up to 3rd following a terrible start for Daniel Abt.
  • 22.11.14 - 14h00
We're almost ready to go now. It's hot and humid in Putrajaya - who will manage the challenge the best?
  • 22.11.14 - 13h58
Buemi is another driver to have taken a grid penalty. He will start from 19th after his car was found to be underweight
  • 22.11.14 - 13h52
There are some big names well down the order on the grid today, championship leader Lucas di Grassi (Virgin Racing) and pre-season favourite Sébastien Buemi (e.DAMS-Renault) amongst them, as well as d'Ambrosio. Can they fight their way through?
  • 22.11.14 - 13h44
FanBoost votes are in, and the drivers who will benefit in Malaysia are Nick Heidfeld (Venturi), Bruno Senna (Mahindra Racing) and Katherine Legge (Amlin Aguri).
  • 22.11.14 - 13h37
Bird: is full of praise for Putrajaya's 'extremely challenging, very bumpy and very technical' street circuit. Can he master it today to take his first Formula E win?
  • 22.11.14 - 13h33
Breaking News: Dragon Racing's Jérôme D'Ambrosio has been sent to the back of the grid for using too much energy in qualifying; this promotes Britain's Sam Bird to the front row, alongside pole-sitter Oriol Servia.
  • 22.11.14 - 13h18
The tension is beginning to build in Malaysia - less than 40 minutes now until lights-out.
  • 22.11.14 - 11h07
As a result of Prost's penalty, it will be an all Dragon Racing front row (Servia and d'Ambrosio) for the start of the race at 2pm local time.
  • 22.11.14 - 11h06
Despite winning qualifying, Nicolas Prost will not start from pole position because of the 10-place grid penalty he was handed after his last-turn accident in Beijing. The Frenchman will consequently start from 11th on the grid.
  • 22.11.14 - 11h01
That's qualifying completed and Nicolas Prost (edams-Renault) has won for the second time after China (1m21.779s). The surprising Oriol Servia (+0,231s) and his Dragon Racing team-mate Jérôme d'Ambrosio (+0.436s) were second and third, chased by Sam Bird (Virgin), Daniel Abt (Audi Sport Abt) and Jarno Trulli (Trulli), etc.
