ABOUT THE race

Third place is a bit of a surprise, to be honest, because after testing we thought some of the other guys were definitely quicker. We managed to keep a lot of cars behind us and I couldn't be happier for the team, because everyone worked so hard over the summer. It was a very tight race and the guys behind me at the end had more power left, which made for an exciting last lap and it was nice not to crash this time!"

Nick Heldfield (Mahindra Racing Formula E Team)

ABOUT THE race

"Firstly, congratulations to Renault - they have clearly done a fantastic job. We thought the best we could expect today in normal conditions would be third and we managed to snatch second, which is good for the mechanics, sponsors and whole team. First we'll celebrate this podium, and then we'll head back home and work hard to improve."

Lucas di Grassi (Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport)

ABOUT THE race

It was a good race. It was a bit of a weird feeling actually, because it was like I was out there on my own! It's always good to win with a bit of a margin, though, and it proves that the team has done a great job and Renault has produced a strong powertrain. I'm already looking forward to the next one now

ABOUT THE city

The interesting thing about our series is that young people and families can enjoy a day of racing in the middle of the world’s biggest cities. We need to continue in this direction and make our championship even more accessible across a wide range of media platforms.

The first qualifying session of Season 2 of the FIA Formula E Championship (2015/2016), which took place in dry, sunny conditions, was won by Sébastien Buemi (Renault e.Dams/Michelin). The Swiss driver was the fastest man after the qualifying 'group' stage in Beijing, China. He then followed that up with the best lap in the ensuing Superpole shootout which the championship has introduced this season. Sebastien Buemi came, saw and conquered in China as the e.DAMS driver dominated by claiming pole position, fastest lap and race victory in the Beijing ePrix to kick-start FIA Formula E’s second campaign in style. One of his key rivals from last season, Lucas Di Grassi followed home a distant second with Nick Heidfeld delivering Mahindra Racing’s maiden podium in third following a stirring late-race defence. Reigning champion Nelson Piquet Jr suffered a torrid day for Nextev TCR and could manage no better than 15th place, two laps down. Next stop Putrajaya in Malaysia in a fortnight’s time - don’t miss it!
  • 24.10.15 - 17h11
Heidfeld (3rd): "Third place is a bit of a surprise, to be honest, because after testing we thought some of the other guys were definitely quicker. We managed to keep a lot of cars behind us and I couldn't be happier for the team, because everyone worked so hard over the summer. It was a very tight race and the guys behind me at the end had more power left, which made for an exciting last lap and it was nice not to crash this time!"
  • 24.10.15 - 17h08
Di Grassi (2nd): "Firstly, congratulations to Renault - they have clearly done a fantastic job. We thought the best we could expect today in normal conditions would be third and we managed to snatch second, which is good for the mechanics, sponsors and whole team. First we'll celebrate this podium, and then we'll head back home and work hard to improve."
  • 24.10.15 - 17h05
Buemi (1st): "It was a good race. It was a bit of a weird feeling actually, because it was like I was out there on my own! It's always good to win with a bit of a margin, though, and it proves that the team has done a great job and Renault has produced a strong powertrain. I'm already looking forward to the next one now!"
  • 24.10.15 - 16h57
Dragon twins Duval and D'Ambrosio take fourth and fifth, with Turvey starring for Nextev TCR in sixth, Bird seventh, Berthon eighth, Daniel Abt ninth and Sarrazin stealing tenth on the line.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h55
Di Grassi finishes second, with Heidfeld narrowly hanging on to secure Mahindra's maiden FIA Formula E podium.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h54
Chequered flag for Buemi - the first winner of Formula E's second season!
  • 24.10.15 - 16h53
Heidfeld has been instructed to coast by his team - is this Duval's chance? The German is having to defend and only just holds on at the chicane.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h52
Another fastest lap for the imperious Buemi, who goes onto his final lap.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h51
D'Ambrosio goes for P4 but locks up and very nearly takes out his team-mate!
  • 24.10.15 - 16h50
D'Ambrosio, meanwhile, is now on the back of Dragon team-mate Duval. It's three in the fight for third.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h49
Prost pits, meaning Heidfeld and Duval's duel is now over the final step on the podium.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h48
Prost is still clinging onto the back of second-placed Di Grassi but he has been given the black-and-orange mechanical warning flag.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h46
Duval, meanwhile, fancies Heidfeld's fourth place and has more usable energy available.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h44
Prost's charge could be blunted, however, by a damaged rear wing. The Frenchman has hit something somewhere...
  • 24.10.15 - 16h42
Buemi is holding his own out front. Di Grassi is focused more now on defending second place from a closing Prost with six laps to go.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h40
Robin Frijns passes Sarrazin for P12 into the final corner. Next target is Vergne.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h37
Yellow flags again - we spoke too soon. Piquet Jr is stopped out on-track. The Brazilian does, however, manage to get going again.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h36
The later stops have really helped Turvey, Berthon and Piquet Jr, who are up to seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h35
Re-start! A feisty Prost immediately snatches third position back from Heidfeld.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h34
Meanwhile, Di Grassi is the biggest winner from the pit visits - he is up to second. Can he do anything about the dominant Buemi? He'll need to make up more than seven seconds if he is to do so...
  • 24.10.15 - 16h33
Second full-course yellow to deal with the debris.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h32
Villeneuve and da Costa come together at Turn 1. Both are in the wall, though the French-Canadian at least is able to rejoin.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h31
A slow stop for Heidfeld drops the German behind Prost, but the e.DAMS driver subsequently runs wide to reinstate the status quo.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h30
Duval, Jerome D'Ambrosio, Turvey, Nathanael Berthon and Piquet Jr remain out on-track.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h29
Race leader Buemi is the first to pit. Pursuers Heidfeld, Di Grassi and Prost all follow suit.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h28
Virgin duo Bird and Vergne are both running very low on energy.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h27
Sarrazin pushes compatriot Vergne further down the order into P8. JEV has also used more energy than any of his rivals.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h26
More contact between Vergne and Duval as Loic finds a way past for fifth but has to skip the chicane to do so. Bird is looking to get in on the act too...
  • 24.10.15 - 16h25
After a strong start to the race, Senna is now tumbling down the order as Stephane Sarrazin and the recovering Bird demote the Brazilian to ninth.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h24
Buemi is currently scampering away to the tune of two seconds per lap...
  • 24.10.15 - 16h23
Senna succumbs to a dual French assault as Vergne and Duval sneak past in successive corners.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h22
Back in the midfield, Antonio Felix da Costa has overhauled former F1 World Champion and Formula E new boy Jacques Villeneuve for 13th.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h21
Di Grassi and Prost are piling the pressure on second-placed Heidfeld. Buemi, meanwhile, is some nine seconds up the road in the lead...
  • 24.10.15 - 16h20
Bird passes Daniel Abt to move back into the top ten.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h19
The first FanBoosts of the new FIA Formula E season go to Bird, Piquet Jr and Oliver Turvey.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h18
A new fastest lap for Buemi as he extends his advantage.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h17
Almost immediately, Bird has undone all his good work by locking-up and running straight on at Turn 3. The Briton has dropped outside the top ten.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h15
Sam Bird passes Duval for seventh place into the final corner. His next target is Virgin team-mate Vergne.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h12
Green flag! We're racing again in Beijing!
  • 24.10.15 - 16h11
Full-course yellow to deal with de Silvestro's 'off'.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h10
Vergne and countryman Loic Duval are going at it hammer-and-tongs for P6 as they enthusiastically swap positions.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h09
Simona de Silverstro (Andretti) has ploughed into the wall on the exit of Turn 2.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h08
Heidfeld is certainly not letting Buemi relax up front...
  • 24.10.15 - 16h07
Prost has locked up and gone straight on. Di Grassi is past into third place.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h06
As we say that, Bruno Senna squeezes past JEV into fifth.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h05
Buemi leads Heidfeld, Prost, Lucas Di Grassi and Jean-Eric Vergne.
  • 24.10.15 - 16h04
LIGHTS-OUT! It's a textbook getaway from pole-sitter Sebastien Buemi, as Heidfeld goes around the outside of Prost into P2.
  • 24.10.15 - 15h59
We're about to go racing in Beijing!
  • 24.10.15 - 15h54
It's a busy grid in Beijing, testament to Formula E's enduring popularity as it heads into its second campaign.
  • 24.10.15 - 15h51
Energy-saving looks set to play a major role in today's race - who will prove savviest on that score?
  • 24.10.15 - 15h28
Not forgetting, of course, that we have Nicolas Prost (e.DAMS) and Nick Heidfeld (Mahindra) second and third on the grid - remember what happened between them at the last corner last year...
  • 24.10.15 - 15h27
What can defending champion Nelson Piquet Jr (Nextev TCR) do from right at the back of the grid? There are some fast names down the field who will be looking to fight their way through.
  • 24.10.15 - 15h22
Less than 40 minutes to go now until the lights go out to signal the start of the first race of the brand new season of Formula E!
  • 24.10.15 - 13h08
The first qualifying session of Season 2 of the FIA Formula E Championship (2015/2016), which took place in dry, sunny conditions, was won by Sébastien Buemi (Renault e.Dams/Michelin). The Swiss driver was the fastest man after the qualifying 'group' stage in Beijing, China. He then followed that up with the best lap in the ensuing Superpole shootout which the championship has introduced this season. Team-mate Nicolas Prost (+0.284s) was second, but third-placed Nick Heidfeld (Mahindra Racing) was more than a second short of Buemi's benchmark.
  • 24.10.15 - 13h07
The order after Formula E's first ever Superpole shootout was Buemi, Prost, Heidfeld, di Grassi and Vergne.
  • 24.10.15 - 13h05
Buemi is delighted as he claims the three bonus points that reward pole position. The Swiss Renault e.Dams driver will start Season 2's first ePrix from the front of the grid thanks to a time of 1m37.297s. "I messed up the second sector," he admitted to his team over the radio, "but I didn't give up..."
  • 24.10.15 - 13h02
Buemi's first sector time is faster than Prost's but the second is slower...
  • 24.10.15 - 13h01
The three-time Formula E race winner Sébastien Buemi is the last driver to attempt a Superpole lap.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h57
Vergne's hopes of starting Season 2's curtain-raiser from pole position were dashed immediately when he locked up big time for Turn 1 and failed to take the corner. "I don't know what the hell is going on with the brakes," the Frenchman was heard to comment. His official lap time was 2m21.284s.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h54
An aggressive lap by Nicolas Prost earns him a time of 1m37.581s. The Renault e.Dams driver goes straight to the top of the order. Fellow Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne is next.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h52
Heidfled completes his Superpole lap in 1m38.339s, which is 0.173s quicker than his earlier effort. The Mahindra Racing driver is on provisional pole as Nicolas Prost starts his out lap...
  • 24.10.15 - 12h50
The German also locks up under braking for Turn 1, but less than di Grassi...
  • 24.10.15 - 12h49
    Now Heidfeld is on-track.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h47
That's not a great lap from the Brazilian who records a 1m39.539s. That's a whole second slower than his earlier qualifying effort.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h46
Di Grassi locks up into the first tight turn.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h45
So its one flying lap for each of the session's five drivers who will go out one at a time. Di Grassi is on his out lap.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h39
The conditions are dry and sunny (19°C) for Formula E's first Superpole shootout. The first driver to go out is Lucas di Grassi, last year's race winner in Beijing.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h38
So the Supêrpole shootout will feature Buemi, Vergne, Prost, Heidfeld and di Grassi who posted the five best qualifying times.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h35
D'Ambrosio still gets into the top 10, but Duval (8th) and Bird (9th) are quicker. Formula E newcomer Robin is 13th and Turvey ends up 15th.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h33
There has been contact between D'Ambrosio's Dragon Racing car and a wall. He is continuing but his car has suffered some damage
  • 24.10.15 - 12h29
We've got the last qualifying group on the track now in Beijing. Who will be the five drivers to take part in the Superpole shootout?
  • 24.10.15 - 12h26
Jean-Eric Vergne puts DS Virgin Racing second on the provisional grid with a 1m38.028s. Jacques Villeneuve is ninth and Nathanael Berthon is 12th. Last is the 2014/2015 champion Nelson Piquet Jr. after NEXTV TCR's problems with its cars this morning.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h22
Buemi goes straight to the top thanks to three fastest sector times which add together to produce a lap of 1m37.488s, 0.540s better than Prost.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h21
Buemi is the first Group 3 driver on the track, eager to emulate his Renault e.Dams team-mate Nicolas Prost who tops the provisional order.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h19
Next out will be Vergne, Buemi, Villeneuve and Berthon.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h11
Di Grassi has gone to the top of the order with a 1m38.519s, but the Brazilian is bettered by Prost (1m38.206s). Heidfeld goes second with a 1m38.512s, while Sarrazin collects provisional fourth with a lap of 1m38.645s. With Senna is fifth spot, the group's five drivers are split by 0.555s.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h08
There are only four drivers in qualifying groups 1 and 3 because the two Trulli cars will not be in action for the 2015/2016 FIA Formula E Championship opener. The team's drivetrains failed to clear Chinese customs.
  • 24.10.15 - 12h03
This year, there is only one flying lap per car...
